Activities and Events Ideas

Choosing an activity that is most appropriate for your community will mean assessing the available resources, and deciding what is most relevant and accessible for workers and clients.

We encourage you to use your imagination to create a unique and “talked about” event.

Workers Appreciation Day events and activities should focus on:

  • making the day-to-day work of community social service workers evident and visible;
  • correcting the way community social service workers are viewed;
  • the need for public policy that will strengthen and expand the sector;
  • the need to fully fund community social services.

Possible events and activities that will help do this include:

  • workplace events such as a coffee house, cake presentation, or BBQ;
  • articles in the local newspaper about the Day;
  • posting profiles of workers and the jobs they do;
  • website testimonials from clients on how CSS workers have supported them;
  • “town halls” with municipal counsellors and/or provincial representatives;
  • invitations to government representatives to BBQs and “meet the workers” events at the workplace;
  • questionnaires to encourage the reflection of the community on the importance of CSS;
  • distribution of NUPGE's funding flyer “No way to show we care”;
  • open letters or postcard campaigns to lobby for sufficient funding;

Whatever your event, remember to:

  1. rally support from community groups and your municipal council;
  2. invite your government representatives and community leaders to your events;
  3. let the newspapers, radio and television stations know with a media release;
  4. use NUPGE posters to promote the event;
  5. use NUPGE leaflets to inform and raise the profile of the community social service sector.
